   HISTORY OF THE MALINOIS BREED

The Belgian Malinois is one of four of Belgian Sheepdogs which were developed in the late 1800's

Collectively, these four "breeds"  that were established ended up taking the name of the city from which they developed.  In 1891,the first breed club was formed , wrote the standards and began to register these dogs.

The Belgian Malinois dog got its beginnings in the city of Malines, Belgium.   As breeders worked hard to define the breed, their work was halted when the First World War broke out.  The malinois dogs were used in the military as artillery dogs, messengers, and cart dogs.

The decades after the war the breed flourished in Europe and in the United States.

During World War ll the military again sought out malinois dogs as Red Cross dogs and scouts. They have also been employed by the French National Police and used in the military in India, Germany, and Australia.

The American Secret Service also uses them to guard the White House.

The breed was officially recognized in the United States by the American Kennel Club in 1959 , and are now used for herding, police work, guarding ,tracking, and sports
